Coloring Leather
There are two lessons using the academic approach to teach you the fundamentals using acrylic paint to realistically render your leather carvings. The first part teaches you about the medium and gives you the terms and techniques in 16 pages of fully illustrated in color. There are 5 supplemental pages providing you with the tracing layout, carving, tooling and easy to follow step-by-step coloring instructions for the flying mallard. Also included is a 3 page excerpt from Paul’s book “Pictorial Definition” providing you with information for portraying light on form. You will receive two 5″ x 7″ leather reproductions of Paul’s carving of the mallard for you to paint as learning exercises. (One for each lesson.)

Pictorial Definition
I have found through working with my students and their problems, that there is a real need to expound on the basic function of leather carving tools. I think it is important to the beginner, as well as those desiring a more advanced expression of art in leather, to know not only how a particular step is done, but WHY it is done the way it is.
WHAT IS PICTORIAL DEFINITION? A “picture”, according to Webster, is: “a representation as of a person, object or scene, executed on a flat surface.” As a pictorial leather artist, you are creating a representation of something real. It is our goal to define this real thing as something having FORM, TEXTURE and occupying SPACE. Of course you can only see form, texture and space by the effect of LIGHT.
This book is a study of the basic theory of leather carving, or an analysis of the principles of accurately defining pictures in leather. It is not a book to open, trace a pattern, and start tooling some leather. It is a study of a concept of pictorial leather carving. A concept, or theory, I feel, is based on a great deal of thought, sound judgement, some artistic knowledge and many years of experimenting—more often than not, learning what not to do. To best understand and use this concept you should start at the beginning; read, think and experiment your way through it to the end

Bundle of both of the above lessons
Coloring Leather is a good companion for the Pictorial Definition Publication which was written when Paul was using leather dyes. The mallard is in both lessons enabling one to understand the difference in using dyes and acrylic paints.
